Some bigger cities may be able to boast the big leagues, but here in Birmingham we still have successful hometown teams who play with just as much grit and have just as dedicated of fans.
Soccer fans can take comfort in knowing their sport has taken the city by storm. Fans can rally behind the Birmingham Legion FC, the city’s professional soccer franchise and a member of the USL Championship.
Big fan of baseball? The Birmingham Barons know how to bring the heat. Most famously known for housing Michael Jordan’s brief stint in minor league ball, The Barons continue to sell out Regions Field game after game.
Coming soon is Protective Stadium, a new multi-use, open-air facility nestled in the city’s Uptown Entertainment District. This soon-to-be new home for UAB Football is sure to give football lovers a reason to rally.
Don’t worry hockey fans – we haven’t forgotten about you. The return of the Birmingham Bulls has kept this underdog southern sport in high demand.
No matter your game, it’s safe to say Birmingham has a team for you.
The World Games
We’re about to host one of the world’s largest sporting events in our own backyard, and we can’t wait. The World Games is coming to the Magic City in 2022 and it’s bringing some of the most extraordinary international sports talent along with it. Recognized by The International Olympic Committee, this will be the first time the massive sports event has been hosted in the U.S. since 1981.
Magic City Classic
The largest historically black college and university football game in the country happens right here in Birmingham. Each year, over 60,000 fans pack out Legion Field for the annual Magic City Classic showdown between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University. But this is more than just a game – the jam-packed October weekend includes concerts, parades and tailgates that truly can’t be beat.
